The 2020 vintage was a warm dry vintage with lower than normal yields resulting in concentrated fruit aromas and flavors.
96 Points - Owen Bargreen: The 2022 ‘Estate Clone 4' Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a site planted back in 2003, located on a south-facing slope of the vineyard. The location is set on loess soils and silts. Red bell pepper and fresh thyme hit the nose alongside allspice and shades of creme de cassis. The palate is laden with finesse and richness, showing excellent verve and texture. A total stunner, enjoy this outstanding bottling now and over the next fifteen to twenty years. Drink 2024-2040
94 Points | Cellar Stocker - Northwest Wine Report, Sean Sullivan: Woodward’s clone-specific wines offer fascinating insights into this vineyard. The aromas here are brooding, with notes of moist earth, dark cherry, licorice, and herb. Plush, high thread count flavors follow, showing seamless intensity along with restraint. The finish sails. It’s breathtaking, with the freshness of the vintage moving it along at a brisk pace. Best from 2028 to 2035. 14.8% alcohol. Natural cork.
100% Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard: Planted in 1977, Woodward Canyon is the westernmost vineyard in Walla Walla Valley AVA, roughly 15 miles west of Walla Walla Washington. There are 41 vineyard acres planted and several more acres of green belts that support native species such as western juniper, ponderosa pine, western sagebrush, arrowleaf balsamroot, and perennial wildflowers. Ritzville silt loam over fractured basalt, slope 15-18%, 750-850ft elevation. Managed by Woodward Canyon. All grapes are Salmon Safe certified, as is the wine. Clone 4: 1.77 acres, 3'x9' spacing, planted in 2003 on a terraced hillside at 600' elevation; among the highest-rated clones in Napa, CA. The plant material for this clone was originally sourced from Mendoza, Argentina but came to us from a certified nursery getting the plant material from FPMS at UC Davis; Davis, CA. Observation from Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard: grows well at WC Estate Vineyard, is very nice in the Cabernet Sauvignon blend; dark concentrated black fruit, great mouthfeel, and texture.
